SBK022 | Theories of State | 3+0+0 | 5 |
This course introduces a methodological approach to the state. Debates about the role and nature of the state are central to contemporary politics. With the erosion of liberal democracy and the rise of authoritarian regimes, the state has been subjected to a range of interpretations such as the authoritarian state, the failed state, the exceptional state and the rogue state. Therefore, it is necessary to examine not only the functions of the state in contemporary politics, but also its formation, rescaling, and relations with other social organizations and different segments of social life. This course aims to open up for discussion competing explanations of the nature, functions and changing structure of the state in modern politics. In doing so, existing approaches such as the Weberian approach, liberal/neo-liberal theories, structural-functionalist explanations and Marxist theories of the state will be discussed. Following a comparative analysis of these approaches, the capitalist state as a formation, entity and abstraction will be analyzed and its theoretical roots will be questioned. The main objective of this course is to evaluate existing methodologies and consider alternative methodologies. |

It is clear that the structure of administration and administrative organization cannot be explained without associating it with economic, social and political developments. In this context, the operation of the course has been developed with the focus on the "administrative system" and accordingly, a subject integrity has been created by associating it with the other developments mentioned above. It is known that the Ottoman administration system was influenced by the elements coming from the Islamic and Seljuk Empires, which had the same belief norms as the Sassanid and Byzantine Empires, which were the former empires that lived in the region. In this sense, the historical developments and accumulation from the empires established in the region to the Republican period will constitute the content of our lesson. |
