Prof. Dr. Can Ünver re-elected to the UN's Committee on Migrant Workers

Professor Dr. Can Ünver has been re-elected as a member of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, which serves as the monitoring body for the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICRMW), signed under the United Nations (UN) framework in New York.

Among the issues of great importance for Türkiye at the UN, the effective implementation of the Committee's work and the fair and comprehensive application of the international convention in protecting the rights of all migrant workers and members of their families are prominent. Türkiye adopts a sensitive approach to the protection of the rights of migrant workers and their families and aims to be a follower of international norms in the field. By collaborating with the Committee, Türkiye strives to improve the living conditions of migrant workers and their families, protect human rights, and establish a fair migration policy.

In the elections held at the United Nations Headquarters to determine the members of the Committee for the 2024-2027 term, Professor Dr. Can Ünver, an academic from the Faculty of Economics, Administrative, and Social Sciences at Istinye University, was re-elected as a member of the Committee. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement regarding the elections for the Eleventh Meeting of States Parties to the Convention that Professor Dr. Can Ünver was the candidate of Turkey and was elected to the Committee for the third time. Previously, he served as a Committee member in the 2016-2019 and 2020-2023 terms, as well as holding the position of Vice-Chairperson in 2018-2019 and Chairperson in 2019-2022.

Türkiye played an active role and made significant contributions in the negotiations of the Global Compact for Migration (IOM), which was adopted at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 and contains references to migrant workers, and also attaches great importance to all countries becoming parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, as members of the UN.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement emphasized that Turkey, which has a high number of migrant workers in its diaspora and also hosts a significant number of foreign laborers, is making efforts to find permanent solutions to the problems of migrants and refugees. It highlighted that Türkiye played an active role and made significant contributions in the negotiations of the IOM, adopted at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, which includes references to "migrant workers".
