Effects of Climate Change Discussed at Istinye University

At a conference titled "A Scientific Perspective on Climate Change", Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, President of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM), talked about Turkey's polar explorations and discoveries in Antarctica.

Prof. Dr. Özsoy’s research examines sea ice in Antarctica. She has made significant contributions to research in the field of climate change, contributing to over 200 scientific publications related to polar research in the last eight years.

Her discussion began with the journey to the poles initiated in the 1960s and culminated with the current situation in this geographic area. Reminding us that Antarctica does not belong to any country, she emphasized the importance of having a say in Antarctica’s fate due to its economic and political value. She spoke of the impact of every study conducted in Antarctica, emphasizing that the climate will change in this region.

"Climate Change is Now in Our Backyard"

Özsoy completed her doctoral studies in Antarctica in 2005 and upon returning to Turkiye immediately began working. "In 2015,” she said, “We established the Polar Research Center at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) to create an institutional structure. As climate change increasingly becomes a problem in our backyard, we launched our scientific expeditions to Antarctica under the auspices of the [TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center] Presidency."
