As part of the Skill Development Workshops at the Faculty of Communication, Istinye University, the Exlibris Workshops organized by Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş are continuing. Exlibris is an art form that introduces and honors the book owner. These are small printed images with the owner's name and various illustrations placed on the inside cover of books by book lovers. The word "Exlibris" means "from the library of..." and refers to the owner's collection. It is the book's business card or deed. It introduces the book owner, honors them, and reminds the borrower to return the book. Exlibris is an important communication tool.
“Exlibris brings art into the hands of people and into the books, making its fascinating warmth felt.”
Exlibris designs are made by commission for living individuals or institutions, reflecting their characteristics. When looking at the creation process, it is clear that all the possibilities of visual arts are used. From a functional point of view, it can be considered as a graphic design product.
It is known that the history of Exlibris dates back to around 1400 B.C. and its use became widespread with the invention of the printing press. Later, Exlibris was not only used for sticking inside books but also became a collectible and changeable object. It evolved from being a book-specific sign to an independent graphic work.
In Turkey, Exlibris became known with books imported from the West. Books containing Exlibris designs, widely used in European countries, came to our country through second-hand sales, and when the book owners passed away, they were either donated to libraries by their relatives or sold to second-hand bookstores. The seals found on books from the Ottoman period, although property marks, do not qualify as Exlibris. However, with their unique, calligraphic structures, they served the same function as a coat of arms or logo for the individuals they belonged to.
Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş is making intensive efforts to recognize and spread the art of Exlibris.
Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş, who is the Head of the Department of Visual Communication Design, is also the President of the Istanbul Exlibris Association and the Director of the Exlibris Museum. He has been making significant efforts to recognize and promote Exlibris in Turkey. In 1996, he wrote a book on "Exlibris." He organized the 5th International Exlibris Competition and the FISAE International Exlibris Congress in 2010.
